Letter From The Editor

A year has passed since our AGM in Mullingar. It has been a very busy and productive twelve months. We have made great strides in promoting Reiki and RFI through the media and other agencies. Our Chairperson, Brigid Maher and our Vice-Chairperson, Mary Tuohy have been representing our members regarding self regulation at FICTA meetings. They have been working tirelessly on our behalf.

RFI has played an active role in communicating with other Associations and with Government representatives.

Don't forget about our Social Gathering and AGM in February. It will be an ideal opportunity for you to meet other members. It promises to be an exciting and uplifting day. Details can be found on page 2.

From January our members will be entitled to discounts on various products and courses. We plan to expand on the list which you can read about on page 3.

We have enclosed a list of upcoming courses which FICTA Skillnet are facilitating. RFI members are entitled to a discount of 10% on all courses listed. (190 euro instead of 230euro)

We hope that you will continue to support the Reiki community and RFI by renewing your membership with us for another year. Enclosed please find a Membership Renewal form. We have accomplished much in our short life and are excited about the journey ahead.

Best wishes for a peaceful Christmas and a New year filled with joy and magic.

Early renewal would be greatly appreciated to ease administration, and to avoid delays in issuing your certificates for 2005. For those of you who have availed of our insurance premium discount, and those of you listed on our Practitioner Register, this is particularly relevant.

What with the festive season, the holidays and the huge increase in postal activity in the months of December & January, early submissions are highly recommended. You will need to complete the Membership Renewal form enclosed, and update us with any changes to your situation e.g. additional levels attained, change of address etc.

Quarks Theory wins Nobel Physics prize

The 2004 Nobel physics prize was won for showing how tiny quark particles interact. The three American scientists who share this award showed how quarks, the building blocks of protons and neutrons, were held together by a so-called 'strong force'.

Without this force there would be nothing holding the tiny particles together, nor indeed any basic building blocks to assemble into any object. 'They really helped us to understand how it is that quarks are bound together to make protons and neutrons,' commented David Wark, a particle physicist from the UK.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said their work helped give a 'unified description of all the forces of nature... from the tiniest distances within the atomic nucleus to the vast distances of the universe'.

Their theory is known as quantum chromodynamics and will assist the scientific community to broaden their understanding about how the universe was built and how it works.

Stress - Key Factor in Breast Cancer

Over 40% of women who have overcome breast cancer believe that stress was a key factor in their illness.

Almost 400 women who had been clear of breast cancer for an average of nine years were asked what they thought had caused the illness and what had prevented its recurrence. Over 40% believed that stress had been one of the key factors in them developing cancer, with genetics being the second most common factor at 27%.

Nearly two-thirds stated that a positive attitude had helped to keep the cancer from returning. A quarter of the participants felt that prayers had helped them.

Over 11% of the women felt complementary therapies had helped to prevent the cancer from returning.

Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer found in Irish women after skin cancer. Around 600 women die of the disease every year and the Irish mortality rate is higher than the European average.

The results of this study can be found in the latest edition of the medical journal 'Psycho-Oncology'.

Flu Shots linked to Alzheimers

Hugh Fudenberg, one of the worlds's leading immunogeneticists and the thirteenth most quoted biologist of our time (nearly 850 papers in peer review journals) has raised some concerns in recent times with his comments about the link between flu shots and Alzheimer's. A study carried out between the years of 1970 and 1980, indicated that a person who had five consecutive flu shots had a ten times greater chance of developing Alzheimers than if they had one two or no flu shots. Dr. Fudenberg stated that this is due to mercury and aluminum buildup in the brain. This causes cognitive dysfunction.

Book Review

'Who Moved My Cheese' - Dr Spencer Johnson

December is a time when people reflect on the passing year and contemplate what next year might unfold. Change is always a good thing but it is often accompanied by resistance and clouded with uncertainty.

Dealing with change and enjoying it are highlighted in the book Who Moved My Cheese. Ingeniously written, the story uses cheese as a metaphor for what you would like to have in life. The amusing story revolves around four characters that live in a maze and seek cheese to nourish and fulfill themselves. Hem and Haw are two of the characters featured. Their attitude to life and to cheese impacts on their journey and determines how successful they are in finding cheese.

This is a book which can be read in a little over an hour. The profound and simple truths contained within its pages have been read by over eleven million people. It represents an understandable and attainable road map for everyone to use as we deal with our own circumstances around change.

Who Moved My Cheese by Dr. Spencer Johnson has helped to open the door to the future for millions of people. It would make a wonderful Christmas gift

Brain Chip gives hope to a paralyzed man

A team of neuroscientists has successfully implanted a chip into the brain of a quadriplegic man, allowing him to take care of tasks which were previously impossible.

Since the insertion of the tiny device in June, the 25 year old has been able to check emails, play computer games, control a television and turn lights on and off by simply using his thoughts.

The results of the pilot clinical study were presented to the society for Neuroscience annual conference in San Diego, California last month.

Surgeon Gerhard Friehs, associate professor of clinical neurosciences at Brown Medical School, who implanted the device, described the results as 'spectacular and almost unbelievable'.

'Here we have a research participant who is capable of controlling his environment by thought alone - something we have only found in science fiction so far,' said Friehs.
